GROUP EXHIBITION
BODIES OF EVIDENCE

- MAD Art Gallery, Poznan (PL)

In Bodies of Evidence, three Southern African artists—Felix Shumba, Thembinkosi Hlatswayo, and Malebona Maphutse—confront the ways in which the body becomes a site of memory, violence, resistance, and reconstruction. Through painting, photography, and mixed media, they draw on personal and collective histories to expose the layered traces left by systems of power—colonial, political, spiritual, and familial.

The body, in their hands, is not merely depicted but inscribed: marked by displacement, by ritual, by desire, by survival. Hlatswayo’s darkroom interventions destabilize the photographic image, turning trauma into abstraction. Maphutse builds poetic assemblages that speak of ancestral echoes, feminine inheritance, and erased lineages. Shumba’s figures fracture and bloom within dystopian landscapes, reflecting on masculinity, faith, and the haunted spaces of the everyday.

Together, their works form a living archive—intimate yet confrontational—where the body holds what history tries to bury. In this exhibition, the artists do not offer answers, but insist on presence: embodied, fragmented, enduring.
