I DREAM I'M CROSSING THE RIVER

INQUIRE

Thembinkosi Hlatshwayo is a photographer based in Lawley, Johannesburg. He uses his family-run shebeen as a studio in which to investigate themes of firsthand and generational trauma, violence, and memory. Hlatshwayo has been growing increasingly curious in various materialities as a medium of expression. He was mentored by the photographer Jabulani Dhlamini and photography curator and educator John Fleetwood.

One of the focuses of my residency would be in collaborating with sound/song and a selected piece of writing as a means of extending his ongoing body of work Umnyakazo (movement), which explores notions of movement, stillness, and moments in-between and deals with themes of grief, death, birth, and memory.
