BAS COENEGRACHT

Bas Coenegracht (b. 1974, Maastricht) is a Dutch contemporary painter based in Amsterdam. Educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and ARCO Lisbon, his work explores the poetic tension between urban decay and human presence. Using multi-layered painting techniques, he captures the unpredictable forms and textures of overlooked cityscapes—forgotten harbors, industrial ruins, and abandoned railway sites - imbuing them with a softness and emotional depth that counterpoint
their monumentality.

Coenegracht’s paintings often juxtapose figurative elements with abstract textural environments, evoking themes of absence, spirituality, and introspection. His work has been supported by the Mondriaan Fonds and is represented in major galleries across Europe, including exhibitions like “I Have More Souls Than One” in Genk and Poznań. Through his artistry, he offers a modern ode to our constructed surroundings - imbued with theatrical drama, layered aesthetics, and a masterful blend of realism and abstraction.
